Nafplion, Greece - March 23
One of the most picturesque towns on the Peloponnese peninsula, Nafplion is a remarkably preserved coastal gem and gateway to the Corinth Canal.Rising above the old part of town close to the waterfront, the Akronafplia Fortress is the oldest of Nafplio's three castles and located in the oldest part of town.
The 2nd castle, built by the Venetians between 1711-1714 during their second occupation of the area, then captured by the Ottomans in 1715, Palamidi’s Fortress was captured in 1822 by Greek nationalists.
The Palamidi Fortress commands an impressive view over the Argolic Gulf, the city of Náfplion and the surrounding country.
The third castle sits on a small island just off the shoreline. Castle Bourtzi, is a Venetian castle from the 15th century.
Dave and friend Michael climbed to top of Palamidi Fortress (1000+ steps to top). Since it was windy, with scattered rain, I stayed down in the lovely town, shopped, and enjoyed coffee and people watching with Nina.
