Giza Pyramids - Cairo, Egypt - April 9
The Giza pyramid complex is the site on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt, that includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with associated complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza.
All were built during the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, between 2600 and 2500 BC. It’s the oldest of the Ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
There were once over 100 pyramids in Egypt, with 9 in Giza, 6 for men and 3 (small ones) for women.
The Great Pyramid is the largest, but not the oldest. Oldest is the Step Pyramid in Sakkara. The Great Pyramid is now about 29 feet shorter than original size. Over 2,300,000 blocks, each averaging 2-1/2 tons have been stolen from the Giza pyramid!! No mortar type of material was used to build these pyramids.
The only one remaining in Giza with original limestone partially covering over the blocks at the peak is the Pyramid Khafre.
The engineering feat of building these, almost 5,000 years ago is mind boggling.
There were 11 passenger busses today just for this excursion. Plus busses for 150 of the hardworking ship crew, who had the day off to visit the pyramids.
We had police escorts and drove together in a convoy, even though we have felt very safe in all the places we've visited.
We were in the area four years ago, but I was sick and had to miss the pryamids.
Visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza was another bucket list item and a dream come true. Another wonderful day. So grateful to be here.
Looks like we made it!!!!
Pyramid Khafre, only one with original overcoat of limestone at peak.
Where's Waldo? Show hiw big these pyramids are.
