Bergen, Norway - May 11-12
Nestled between gargantuan snow-capped mountains, magnificent fjords and one of Europe's largest glaciers, picturesque Bergen is an ancient city with deep Viking roots. Founded in 1070 on what was a Viking settlement, Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. For many centuries, it was the country's capital and was in the Hanseatic League, a merchant powerhouse with ports throughout the Baltic.Perhaps its most iconic landmark is the gathering of quaint, colorful historic wooden gable-roof buildings of the Bryggen Wharf.
Overlooking picturesque VĂ¥gen Harbor, this is the most charming district of Bergen, evocative of the old-world trading center that once bustled in the shadows of towering cargo ships offloading stockfish and cereals from around the Baltic.
The colorful cluster of structures gave the medieval-era town its nickname, "the Wooden City."
Today, Bryggen Wharf is a stroller's delight, with shops, cafes, and art galleries. Actually, the whole city is a walker's delight, with statues, great architecture, museums, and color everywhere.
