DUBROVNIK, CROATIA - March 19-20
With its spectacular Adriatic setting, surrounded by almost 2 miles of stone walls, this gleaming 12th-century medieval city has incredibly preserved structures. The crystal clear blue/green waters glisten like precious jewels.
Inside the walls sits the gleaming Old Town and the Stradun, its main pedestrian area, lined with old stone houses with tiled red roofs, marble streets, great shops/restaurants, outdoor cafes, museums and churches.
We absolutely loved spending 2 days here, walking the high walls (1,081 total stairs), through castles, fortresses, and several museums, tasting local Croatian beer and wine.
Game of Thrones was filmed in many parts of Croatia, especially in Dubrovnik. The castle, fortress and walls in Dubrvnik were the setting of many episodes. T-shirts, books, posters, and other Game Of Thrones items are sold here.
Some of the tiled roofs were new, due to the bombings during The Croatian War of Independence, fought from 1991 to 1995. Photos inside the Rector's Palace show a very bleak picture of those days, reminding us of what is happening in the Ukraine today.
Dubrovnik, Croatia, another bucket list city that far exceeded our expectations.
