Zadar, Croatia - March 18

Zadar, Croatia - March 18

For over 1,000 years, Zadar was the capital of Dalmatia.
Zadar’s Roman and Venetian past is seen all around this lovely small city, from churches to fallen columns. Also are reminders of the destruction of the city by the Allies.  As an important fascist and later Nazi strategic point, Zadar was a target of a disastrous bombing campaign in World War 2, when 80% of the Old Town was destroyed. Our guide said they were okay with this because the Zadar Croatians had already fled from the Nazis and weren't living there at the time.

Zadar has been rebuilt and includes a picturesque seafront promenade. At the ship's dock area is a new giant solar panel representing the sun and planets of the solar system. Next to the sea, a giant pipe organ of acoustic tubes is embedded beneath marble steps. A melody plays when wind and the waves wash up and over them. Piano keys along the path light up, all creating a unique soundtrack and serene spot on Croatia's oldest coastal settlement.

Musical steps - water goes under steps through acoustic tubes to create music during wave and wind movement
Music comes through holes from organ type pipes that make sounds when waves come through.
